Just Like Heaven

The Thing of the Day is The Cure's song Just Like Heaven.

http://vodpod.com/watch/1036731-the-cure-just-like-heaven

This was the first video I ever saw by The Cure. I was reallllyyy confused, all I could think was that this song was my favorite ever and the video was even cooler and WHY is their hair so big? It was probably the coolest video I'd ever seen... Until I watched Lullaby.. That creeped me out a bit x]

One of THE best pop songs to be written by the almighty Robert Smith (and possibly one of the best pop songs ever...??). This song is off the album Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, The Cure's true breakthrough album in 1987. The band's line-up at the time was Robert Smith singing and playing guitar and keyboards, Simon Gallup on bass, Porl Thompson playing guitar, keyboards and saxophone, Lol Tolhurst on keyboard/"other" (yipes...), Boris Williams drumming, and Roger O'Donnell on keyboards. AMAZING LINE-UP.

This album exhibited all sides of the Cure. From slow, love songs like One More Time, to odd little things; Like Cockatoos, to beautiful calm songs like If Only Tonight We Could Sleep? to radio friendly tunes like Why Can't I Be You? and Just Like Heaven, angsty songs that completely WIN like Fight and Shiver & Shake, and Robert's inspired-by-amazing-literature approach that never fails in How Beautiful You Are.

Just Like Heaven is, obviously, a love song, if a wee bit depressing.... I mean, the girl he loves fell into the sea.. But in the biography Never Enough (yeah, I DID go there...) Robert talks about going for a walk or something with his friends and Mary near a cliff by their home hear the sea in England when he was in his early 20s or teens... It was very foggy and I think he was a bit drunk and he was lost at night... He was afraid of falling off the edge of the cliff, so he basically sat down somewhere in this place and waited until morning. Haha that story made me smile...

In the video, the woman Robert dances with in the middle of the song is his wife, as of 89 (I'm pretty sure...) Mary Poole. Ain't they CUTE together?? :D *fangirliness over*

How is it, that even with a gorgeous radio-friendly song that everyone loves, still has amazing lyrics??

Just Like Heaven

"Show me show me show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck
"Show me how you do it
And I promise you I promise that
I'll run away with you
I'll run away with you"

Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow
"Why are you so far away?" she said
"Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you
That I'm in love with you"

You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Strange as angels
Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You're just like a dream

Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
And found myself alone alone
Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me

You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Just like heaven...

Bob Dylan

Obviously, this blog is gonna have a lot of stuff about music, so, here's another!

The Thing of the Day is a Bob Dylan quote...

"A poem is a naked person... Some people say that I
am a poet."
-Bob Dylan

OK, anyone who says something like this can immediately be placed in Hero Status! You may not love Dylan, but he is one of the best musicians and thinkers who is still alive today. His tongue-in-cheek humor and way of looking at political and social things is so evident in his quote, it's absolutely lovable!

Aaaanndd... That's really all I have to say about that lovely man at the moment!! :)

Robert Smith & David Bowie

I apologize for the lack of posting... I have no excuse except that I didn't have time O.o

I'll post 2 Things today cause I can x]

The Thing of the Day is this amazingly epic video with Robert Smith AND David Bowie onstage TOGETHER at David Bowie's 50th birthday concert.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Krhzq6C1EBw&feature=related

Yeah, I admit, I flipped when I first saw this video. And a few times after, too. I mean, COME ON. My two idols, onstage, singing, together...!! Just two amazingly talented, iconic musicians collaborating... And with Robert absolutely SHREDDING the guitar on LTYSD... They both look like they're enjoying themselves so much! Rarely do you see Robert express that much emotion on stage, which is the complete opposite with David.....

The first song, The Last Thing You Should Do, is from Bowie's album Earthling, which had just been released the same year (1997). The second song, Quicksand, was off the album Hunky Dory released 1971.

Even if you don't particularly enjoy The Cure or Bowie as much as I do, if you appreciate music at ALL, you hopefully realize what a huge concert this was. ;)

Quicksand

I'm closer to the Golden Dawn
Immersed in Crowley's uniform
Of imagery
I'm living in a silent film
Portraying
Himmler's sacred realm
Of dream reality
I'm frightened by the total goal
Drawing to the ragged hole
And I ain't got the power anymore
No I ain't got the power anymore

I'm the twisted name
on Garbo's eyes
Living proof of
Churchill's lies
I'm destiny
I'm torn between the light and dark
Where others see their targets
Divine symmetry
Should I kiss the viper's fang
Or herald loud
the death of Man
I'm sinking in the quicksand
of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore

[CHORUS]
Don't believe in yourself
Don't deceive with belief
Knowledge comes
with death's release

I'm not a prophet
or a stone age man
Just a mortal
with the potential of a superman
I'm living on
I'm tethered to the logic
of Homo Sapien
Can't take my eyes
from the great salvation
Of bullshit faith
If I don't explain what you ought to know
You can tell me all about it
On, the next Bardo
I'm sinking in the quicksand
of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore

[CHORUS]

Modern Love

Modern Love, off the album Let's Dance, by the amazing David Bowie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5foUJHRi5jw

"I know when to go out
I know when to stay in
Get things done

I catch the paper boy
But things don't really change
I'm standing in the wind
But I never wave bye-bye

But I try
I try...

There's no sign of life
It's just the power to charm
I'm lyin' in the rain
But I never wave bye-bye

But I try
I try

Never gonna fall for
Modern love
Walks beside me
Modern love
Walks on by
Modern love
Gets me to the
Church on time

Church on time
Terrifies me
Church on time
Makes me party
Church on time
Puts my trust in
God and man

God and man
No confessions
God and man
No religion
God and man
Don't believe in
Modern love...."

This song is Thing of the Day for many reasons. One, it is so 80's it kills me. Look at those outfits! Amazing. And the saxophone solo is GOD. Do not deny it! It's been stuck in my head for the better part of 3 weeks. This song comes on the same album as China Girl and Under Pressure and Let's Dance, come on!!

If you don't like some David Bowie, something might be fundamentally wrong with you. Check with your parents, were you perhaps dropped on your head or abducted by insane aliens (because, you should know, Bowie WAS an alien. Ziggy Stardust, hello!).

David Bowie is idol to many, and for good reason. Not even mentioning his many crazy outfits and styles, make-up, odd album covers, and of course, the different colored EYES. Nearly everything he has done has changed something in the music industry, from almost acoustic Space Oddity to flamboyant Ziggy to minimalist Low with Brian Eno to R&B Young Americans to poppy Let's Dance to electronica Earthling to creepily hypnotic Heathen. What genre HASN'T Bowie delved into??

Plus, he was the freakin' GOBLIN KING. Complete with blue-streaked mullet and huge collared-trench coat. Yes. Watch Labyrinth.

Thing of the Day

My other blog was boring and had no direction. So now, this blog will have no direction except to have no direction! I will try to post a new thing of the day, be it a song, video, experience, thought, or actual material thing, everyday until I get bored...

So, to steal Robert Smith's words,

Onwards!
